Every year several community members are chosen to vie for the title of Maestro for a Moment and win a chance to conduct The Ohio Valley Symphony. Every dollar is a vote and candidates are encouraged to go forth and raise funds any way they choose to help support the OVS in their mission to present live professional symphonic music for our region.
The Ohio Valley Symphony performs in their home, the Ariel-Ann Carson Dater Performing Arts Centre a beautifully restored 1895 opera house. Now in it’s 29th season, the OVS attracts musicians from 7 states and Canada and presents world class soloists such as David Kim, concert master of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Broadway star Mark McVey, pianist Cecile Licad, jazz trumpeter Byron Stripling and this year conductors from Cincinnati and Columbus Symphonies, New York Philharmonic and Ohio University. This year violinist Elizabeth Pitcairn asked to come back for our 30th anniversary (we said yes). Folk singer Michael Johnathon premiered and recorded a new orchestra show with OVS and it will be aired nationwide in 2019. Grammy nominated American composer Frank Proto is writing and performing a new concerto that the OVS will premiere in April of 2019.
We support music education in the schools and at the Ariel. Orchestra members, soloists and conductors have visited area schools for performances, guest artists have given master classes at the Ariel and we offer private lessons in voice, piano and string instruments all taught by professionals. We open our doors free for all OVS rehearsals to let parents with children experience fine music.
Your dollars help make all this possible so we encourage you to “vote early and vote often” to help your favorite Maestro win and to help us continue to fill the air with music.
